Set the fused shape onto a new piece of shelf paper and lightly trace around the edges with a pencil. Don’t cut the shelf paper — the outline will serve as a guide for placing the various components of your design, but the glass will spread further upon firing. Place the shelf paper on the kiln shelf.
Draw your desired design in pencil on the thicker fiber paper. Geometric designs are easy and simple to create. Simple circles of varying sizes, squares, triangles, and wavy bands can all be combined to create interesting designs. If you wish to create a pictorial piece like example shown here, you may want to trace the outline of the glass shape onto the fiber paper, as well. It helps to have a guide if the design is to reach the edges.
There are several ways to create depth. The easiest way is to stack design elements in layers. Fiber paper is available in a variety of thicknesses, and 1/16 inch is a nice starting point for stacked designs. Remember that the glass will flow around the paper to maintain a level surface, so stacks of fiber paper must not be taller than half the thickness of your fused glass. This will ensure a strong finished piece.
The other way to create depth is to carve into a thicker piece of fiber paper. The project piece was made using 1/8-inch fiber paper. Begin by cutting out your design using a craft knife. If you are stacking, simple silhouettes are all that is needed. If you are carving the fiber paper, once the design has been cut out, hold your craft knife at an angle and cut “V”-shaped channels around areas you wish to thin out. Then, holding the craft knife sideways so the blade is almost parallel to the fiber paper, slice out and peel off the unnecessary layers. The carved areas will impart a bit of texture to the glass, which can be very nice for organic designs. The apples in the project piece are behind the leaves, so I removed about half the thickness of the fiber paper where the apples appear. This brings the leaves both physically and visually in front of the apples as the curve of the apples is more shallow.
When you are satisfied with your design, stack or place the fiber-paper design elements directly on the prepared kiln-shelf paper. When placing the fiber paper, consider how glass flows — take a look at the image of the completed project piece prefer and post fire to see how the upper edge has changed into a wonderfully organic, curvy shape?
This happened because I placed a number of leaves close together near the top edge of the glass. The high areas where the fiber paper took up space caused the glass to flow outside of the lines. I love it, but if you wish to avoid, that simply place your design elements well away from the edges and space them more evenly. The lower half of my apple branch design is made to go in a rounded metal stand, and you can see how it has maintained its rounded shape.
